Estero runner Katy G. Solis wanted a third straight state title for her team, so she led the charge to get it. She also wanted to get the better of teammate — and longtime friend — Kacy Smith at least once in their high school careers before they become roommates while running for Ole Miss next year. Thanks to a late push to sneak past Smith, she managed to do that, too.

"We push each other," Solis said. "Even in practice we push each other. We may even get mad at each other because of it sometimes but it makes us better."

Solis, along with Smith, fronted an entire pack of Wildcats through the 3.1 mile track of Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee straight to another 3A cross country. The senior finished second overall, leading an Estero effort that saw four runners finish in the top 10, to lead the Wildcats to a 96-point victory over runner-up Fort Walton Beach.
